The astrological wheel spans twelve signs of the zodiac. As we move through the year, the Sun completes its tour of all the different signs, creating the changing astrological seasons. The seasons of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces arrive at different times of the year, but they all have the same element in common, water.

If your Sun sign (also known as your star sign), Moon or rising sign is Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, you may sense the qualities of these signs more deeply in your world. How they are expressed will change through the lens of where they sit in your ‘Big Three’ – and through many other factors – but it can be helpful to explore these zodiac energies so you can begin to understand your own astrological make-up.

What is a water sign in astrology?

Whilst every sign is linked to an element, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are known as the water triplicity. The element of water gives us important information about the nature of the waves they create.

Whilst the water element tells us much about these signs, there is so much more beneath the surface. Where each sign falls in the astrological year also tells us something about its unique qualities and how this energy manifests.

Although each sign expresses its water element differently, they all share a unique ability to sense information that lies beneath, to intuit the world on an energetic level and to move with the ebb and flow of emotion. Cancer (21st June–21st July)*

As the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere and we celebrate the summer solstice, the waters of Cancer season lap at our feet. Cancer is known as a tropical (or cardinal) sign, as it coincides with this powerful turning point of the year. After airy Gemini season, it’s Cancerian energy that brings us back into our bodies to reconnect with the emotional intelligence that lives within.

Ruled by the Moon, this sign is known for being intuitive and moving with the ebb and flow of emotion, but there is also a deep – and sometimes unseen – strength here. The open blooms of summer and Cancer season display not only vitality and strength, but also a sense of full vulnerability. As a sign, Cancer reminds us that the two can exist together. Whilst showing vulnerability may feel exposing, it is by letting their true emotions flow that Cancer finds the inner strength to bloom.

This soft yet powerful energy enjoys a sense of security, home and hearth, and will protect each with fierce determination if needed. The loving care and kindness that Cancerians place on home and family is often born of a deep need to nurture and nourish their trusted circle.

To trust others and feel seen in their own emotions is important, but often Cancer is so in tune with the needs of others that their own emotional needs become a little neglected. This is where Cancer can learn to put valuable emotional boundaries in place by bringing direct communication into their relationships and expressing how they feel. Scorpio (23rd October–21st November)*

We welcome the darker part of the year and the chance to look within ourselves as we embrace Scorpio season. Often drawn to the unseen and the transformation that happens beneath the shiny surface of things, Scorpio is fearless when swimming through the murky depths.

Ruled by the warrior planet Mars in ancient astrology and by Pluto in modern astrology, Scorpio carries a potent energy of both self-acceptance and change. This is a sign that understands that, as multi-faceted beings, we carry both light and shadow, and that we can embrace each part with direct honesty. Change and transformation are part of Scorpio’s journey – a truly alchemical process.

The determination and focus of Scorpio energy are mirrored by the solid (or fixed) nature of the sign. A search for truth, an unflinching ability to face change and the power to reinvent are often found in Scorpio’s magical skillset. To be part of Scorpio’s inner circle means that you have earned their trust – no easy feat to accomplish.

The shadow side of Scorpio can gravitate towards a need for power and control, sometimes through a process that can feel destructive. Pisces (18th February–19th March)*

The beginning of Pisces season signals the culmination of the astrological year. Brimming with emotional energy and a sense of completion, Pisces is ready to deep-dive into the inner world. Depicted by two fish swimming in opposite directions, this double-bodied (or mutable) sign is called to navigate a true soul path, even as opposing currents call.

Ruled by Jupiter, known as the ‘Greater Benefic’ in ancient astrology, Pisces is gifted with a sense of expansion and abundance, enhancing intuition and creativity. Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, brings an elusive, nostalgic and romantic energy that can help Pisces see beyond the veil and connect on a spiritual level, dissolving boundaries between this world and the next.
