May’s Blue Moon 2026 | Celebrating the Full Moon in Sagittarius
May’s Blue Moon provides a second chance this month to exhale and let go of what feels heavy. Arriving in the sign of Sagittarius - it illuminates the joy of expanding our vision… but are you ready to open your eyes?
May 31st | PDT 01:45 | EDT 04:45 | BST 09:45
Our Full Moon, arriving on 31st May is the second of two Full Moons in one month. Known as a Blue Moon, it provides an opportunity to take a second look at what has been illuminated since the Flower Moon, at the beginning of the month. Arriving in the fire sign of Sagittarius, it also asks us to seek new perspectives that will lead us towards some interesting planetary transits in June.
Let’s spark the match and explore this Moon together…
In this blog, we’ll unpack:
- The symbolism of a Blue Moon and the zodiac sign it appears in
- Ways to work with this Blue Moon
- Prompts for working with your journal

The symbolism of a Blue Moon and the zodiac sign it appears in
The phrase ‘once in a Blue Moon’ suggests how rare these Moons are, but we see a Blue Moon every two to three years, so whilst they are infrequent they aren’t that rare. There are two definitions of a Blue Moon; the one that is more widely used is the appearance of a second Full Moon in one month. The other (traditional) definition states that there needs to be an extra Full Moon in an astronomical season (four Moons rather than three) and that the third one is the Blue Moon. So, that’s the science bit.
On an energetic level, many people feel intrigued by the prospect of a Blue Moon. Much has been written about these Moons feeling more powerful or mystical or carrying more lunar charge. Because these Moons are infrequent, there can be a sense to expect the unexpected or be on the lookout for unusual opportunities.
Often, we just need to step into the awareness of the energy coming in to receive the insights we need and some people, depending on their birth chart, will find this Moon more potent than others. I suggest tracking your own experience of this Blue Moon and see what comes!
What have you discovered since the last Full Moon?
This Blue Moon appears in the adventurous sign of Sagittarius, ruled by the planet of expansion, Jupiter. There is an exuberance to this sign that helps to evoke a sense of optimism and joy. It brings a very different vibe to our first Full Moon of the month in Scorpio, which asked us to work out what needs to be released to make room for growth.
This Moon is still asking us to release any unhelpful energy, but the road ahead may feel clearer than at the last Full Moon. Saturn’s presence in Aries is asking us to take this task seriously, and not to forget what we are learning along the way. We are reminded that both joy and wisdom can reset our compass and change our whole perspective, if we allow both a seat at the table.
Cosmic Gifts
As June progresses, Jupiter, ruler of this Moon, will meet with Venus, ready to deliver some cosmic gifts. If we have worked with this Moon to welcome new and maybe unexpected insights, we may be more open to receive the gifts of this planetary embrace. Don’t let this Blue Moon pass you by friends, lean in!

Ways to work with the Blue Moon in Sagittarius:
- Consider the shifts: What has changed during this last month of May for you? Take time to appreciate any shifts that have occurred since the last Full Moon.
- Perform a release ritual: If you feel ready to let go of old energy and welcome in a new perspective - write a list of what you wish to release. You might gather with your trusted circle around a fire pit and safely burn your list under the light of the Moon - or do this on your own if you prefer.
- Try something new or different: Is it time to shake things up a little? Maybe try a new place to visit, a new route to work, or take up a new hobby. This could be a good time to re-ignite your sense of adventure in whichever way feels good.
- Practice gratitude: Make a gratitude list under the light of the moon. Give thanks for all that is going well in your world - no matter how big or small - we want to send that gratitude out into the cosmos!
- Keep an open mind: Let the fire of any new insights burn brightly. Remember to take in the whole picture, even if it looks a little different from what you expected.
